Ryan is an IP litigation partner at Klarquist. He litigates patent, copyright, and trade secret cases in district court, handles inter partes reviews at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), and briefs appeals at the Federal Circuit for clients including Amazon, SAP, Microsoft, and DexCom. He was on the Klarquist team that won summary judgment of indefiniteness for DexCom in the District of Oregon, and on the teams that won eight PTAB decisions for Microsoft against Uniloc.
He was a scientist first. He earned a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Oregon’s Institute of Molecular Biology and a B.S. in Physics from Brigham Young University, then went to the University of Michigan Law School for his J.D. His cases have involved glucose monitors, RNA diagnostics, semiconductors, and enterprise software.
Ryan joined the firm as an associate in 2018 from Fish & Richardson and became a partner in 2024. He is involved in the local Oregon patent law community and is vice-chair of the Patent Legislation Committee of the ABA Section of Intellectual Property Law.
