Klarquist Secures PTAB Win for American Express
American Express Company prevailed over Signature Systems, LLC before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board in a covered business method review proceeding involving a reward point conversion and redemption server system. American Express argued that Signature Systems’ patent was not eligible for patenting because it claimed generic and conventional computer functionality to perform the abstract idea of transferring and exchanging reward points data. The Board agreed, finding that the patent merely sought to improve the customer experience of the rewards program rather than improve the underlying technology as legally required. The Board ruled all eight claims under review to be unpatentable.
