Klarquist is pleased to announce partner Derrick Toddy as the firm’s new managing partner, effective September 2025. Derrick is a patent attorney and seasoned litigator whose practice spans the full patent life cycle, from prosecution strategy and freedom-to-operate analyses to litigation, licensing, and USPTO post-grant proceedings.

With deep experience in mechanical and software-related technologies, Derrick has represented clients across a wide range of industries, including leading technology companies such as Microsoft, SAP, and Amazon; sports equipment manufacturer Taylor Made Golf; and medical device innovators Dexcom and Edwards Lifesciences. He has litigated intellectual property disputes in district courts nationwide and argued appeals before the Federal Circuit. Derrick is also highly experienced in post-grant proceedings, regularly preparing and defending inter partes reviews and reexaminations before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB).

He joined Klarquist as a lateral associate in 2006 and became partner in 2019. In his free time, Derrick enjoys weekly date nights, family campouts, attending the theatre, church, and community events, (attempting to) play golf and tennis, and rabidly supporting the Oregon Ducks, Portland Trailblazers, and Seattle Mariners.
