Statement in Support of the Constitution

Published July 29, 2020

As attorneys, we took an oath to support the Constitution.  We reaffirm that oath now and condemn actions that violate constitutional rights, particularly the use of violence in response to peaceful protests.  The First Amendment rights to free speech and to peacefully assemble are fundamental rights in America, as are the Fourth Amendment right to be free from detention or arrest without probable cause, and the Fifth Amendment right to due process, which prohibits the administration of punishment or retribution in the streets by law enforcement.  We do not condone violence, nor do we condone property destruction, but we do fully support citizens exercising their constitutional rights through peaceful protests, both in our city and across the nation.
